LEARN
A Unique Homeschool Experience

Learning far
beyond a desk.

Our Homeschool Kids BJJ program brings together daytime martial arts training, opportunities for friendship and an active break in the homeschool week. It's a distinctive way for Calgary families to make movement and social connection part of their children's regular routine.

With three midday classes each week, your child can spend time learning alongside other homeschool kids, sharing new challenges and becoming part of a community beyond the classroom.

A place to practise. A reason to get moving. An opportunity to belong.

Experienced, Child-Focused Coaching

A caring, welcoming
approach.

Choosing a children's activity is about more than the schedule — it's about the people guiding your child and how your child feels when they walk through the door. At Alavanca Shawnessy, detailed instruction goes hand in hand with a welcoming atmosphere. The academy's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is led by head instructor Dave Pogson, a BJJ black belt, and emphasises guidance for different experience levels.

For our homeschool program, the focus is on helping children feel welcome, supported and encouraged as they learn — comfortable asking questions, trying something unfamiliar and taking pride in their progress. Whether your child arrives full of energy or feeling a little unsure, the aim is the same: a positive experience built around encouragement, respect and care for their training partners.

More Than Martial Arts

An experience
they can grow with.

Three midday classes a week that add friendship, movement and quiet confidence to the homeschool routine.

01

Socialise
& Make Friends

Give your child a shared activity that makes connecting with others feel natural. Learning alongside other homeschool children creates opportunities to practise together, encourage one another and build friendships through a common interest — every class another chance to see familiar faces and feel part of a group.

02

Fun, Screen-Free
Activity

Add an active change of pace to the homeschool day. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu combines movement, technique and problem-solving, with opportunities to develop coordination, strength and fitness — a hands-on way for children to explore what their bodies can do while learning a new skill.

03

Small Steps to
Greater Confidence

Progress doesn't have to mean getting everything right the first time. Learning techniques and working through challenges gives children opportunities to practise focus, persistence and discipline — qualities they can keep practising as they grow, through Alavanca's progressive, problem-solving approach to BJJ.

"The kids program is high level and the coaches are great with kids."
